• Clinical Trainings for Substance Use Services

Harm Reduction 101

Description

This training is meant as an introduction on harm reduction principles for non-clinicians. Learners may work in settings where they serve individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) in housing services, social services, or ancillary staff in SUD treatment programs. SUD Counselors, LPHAs, and license eligible LPHA’s should take Re-Imagining Harm Reduction in Substance Use Treatment (check the SAPC Training Calendar for upcoming dates).

Harm Reduction is a public health approach that focuses on reducing the harmful consequences of using substances and offers critical linkages to treatment. This training includes a basic understanding of what substance use disorder is and how harm reduction can be used to reduce risk of overdose and protect the health and wellbeing of people who use substances. Resources are provided for an audience who is not familiar with SUD treatment so that they may better understand how to access SUD services for their clients.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the effectiveness of three (3) strategies of harm reduction.
  2. Discuss four (4) ways in which harm reduction is an evidenced-based practice as part of the substance use treatment continuum.
  3. Integrate the eight (8) harm reduction principles utilizing a case vignette.
